Sugar Beach - North
This is about half way through
our walk toward the North end of
Sugar Beach. This is about a
five mile walk
Maui Vacation Information
Our favorite place to vacation is Maui. We stay on the
south side of the island, between Kihei and Maalaea, on
Sugar Beach. That part of the island receives little rain
and the beach is soft white sand and is approximately five
miles long. You can walk the entire length of the beach
and pass only a few people. Most of the beach is also
good for swimming or snorkeling.

Scuba Diving
As a cold water diver (Puget Sound), I find Maui to be an interesting contrast. I believe Puget Sound has
more life, but Maui's sea life is certainly more colorful. From January through April you can often hear the
Humpback whales singing while you dive.
My favorite Dive Shop is Maui Dreams Dive Company, located in Kihei. The specialize in guided shore
dives. The guided dives have a maximum size of six divers. The Dive Masters know where various critters
live and just have fun.
Favorite dive and snorkel sites:
Makena Landing: This is my favorite dive site. Lots of turtles, caves, Whitetip sharks, and colorful fish.
Ulua Beach: A great snorkel location and an easy dive site. I particularly like to dive this one at night.
Maui Prince: Turtles, turtles, turtles.
Mile Post 14: Shallow, lots of fish and coral. There was a fatal shark attack at this site in 1991 and other
nonfatal attacks more recently.
Black Rock: The "bunny hill" of snorkeling. A great place for newbies to learn. Lots of smaller fish and
clear water.
Food
Groceries: We stay in condos so we don't eat out a lot. We usually buy our meat in Spokane, freeze it,
and pack it inside a soft cooler inside another item of luggage. We've been delayed by as much as a day
and the meat is still frozen. Places to buy groceries on the island include:
Costco: Near Kahului.
Safeway: All over the island. We like the one in Pilani Village since it's near Kihei. You can find their
stores and their weekly ads from the link.
Foodland: There is a nice store in the Kihei Town Center. You can find their stores and their weekly ads
from the link.
Times Supermarkets: The Kihei store is a great place to go for baked goods, deli items, and sushi. The
link will take you to their store locations and weekly ad.
Farmers Markets: There is a swap meet in Kahului every Saturday morning. Also there are farmers
markets in Kihei and Kaahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului. Buy your flowers and vegetables at these
markets.
Restaurants: Here are a few places to eat.
Mama's Fish House: This is a great place on the Hana highway just past Paia. It's a little spendy, but the
food is great and the atmosphere is the Hawaii you've always imagined.
Buzz's Wharf: A good restaurant in Maalaeaa. Their specialty is Tahitian Prawns.
Maalaea Grill: A nice restaurant in the Maui Ocean Center complex. We like to come here fora leisurely
lunch.
Shaka Pizza: Maui's best pizza - just ask them. Located in Kihei, near Kukui Mall.
Cheeseburger in Paradise: If you like expensive hamburgers in an overcrowded restaurant, then this is
your place. On Front Street in Lahaina. Great view if you can get near the windows.
Bubba Gumps: Also on Front Street in Lahaina. Deep fried everything. Run Forest, Run!
Outback Steakhouse: Not exactly Hawaiian, but good food. In two locations, one in Kihei, one in Lahaina.
Alexander's Fish and Chips: In Kihei near Kalama Park. All outdoor seating but great inexpensive food.
Best fish and chips on Maui.

The Old Sailor
The old sailor is in front of the
Pioneer Inn in Maui. My father
used to go to Lahaina every trip
and say hello to him. I've
continued the tradition
Things to do, things to see
Maui Ocean Center: A surprisingly good aquarium. If you're scuba certified, consider the shark dive.
Old Lahaina Luau: I've never done this, but our daughter and son-in-law loved it.
Sightseeing:
Hana: I do this trip about once every five years or so. It takes the whole day, but you do get to see the jungle side of
the island.
Haleakala: Some people like to hike the crater or get there for the sunrise. I prefer to watch the sun rise from my
lanai with a warm cup of coffee
La Perouse Bay: A terrible road but great views. Drive past the last lava flow on Maui. It was over 200 years ago but
it looks more like last week.
View from Front Street
This is the view from Front Street
in Lahaina, just past the stores.
Molokini
This picture was taken from a
park in front of the Maui Prince.
This is also a great snorkel
location.
