The Old Sailor
Continuing my father's tradition
of visiting the Old Sailor.
Sugar Beach
We walk about 5 miles each
morning on this beach
2011 Maui Vacation
9/28/11
I had a late night meeting last night and then was up at 2:30 to catch a 5:00
AM flight to Maui. We got to Maui at 11:30, got the car (convertible) and the
condo. We were in shorts and flipflops by 1:00.
9/29/11
Up at 7:00 for a five mile walk on the beach. A beautiful sunny day. We also
drove to the Lahaina Cannery Mall and then walked to downtown Lahaina.
What a great day.
9/30/11
Up early for another five mile walk on the beach. Did another direction later in
the afternoon for 11 miles total. Weather was very cloudy and somewhat
windy. Still very warm. Tomorrow is the flea market in Kahului and maybe just
some lounging in the lawn chairs out front.
10/1/11
Went to the flea market and bought some candles, soap, and a few presents
for folks back home. We then walked 14 miles round trip on the beach to
Maalaea and I treated myself to some chili and cornbread for lunch.
10/2/11
Walked in Kihei today and then went to Lahaina. Didn't really do much. Read
a little in front of the condo and just watched the ocean. The weather was
very good today. Tomorrow, maybe some snorkeling.
10/3/11
Today we went snorkeling. We snorkeled for about 90 minutes and froze
despite our wetsuits. We had 1.5 mm dive skins and thought that would be
plenty given 78-79 degree water. I guess I had a lot more bioprene to keep
me warm last time. The south swell was just coming in and there was a fairly
bad surge and mediocre visibility.
10/4/11
Drove to the north side of the island and then had a picnic on the way back.
The south swell was huge - maybe 8 foot waves. Needless to say we stayed
out of the water today.
10/5/11
Another long walk on the beach followed by shopping at Costco, WalMart and
Lahaina. Tonight is pizza for dinner. The south swell is subsiding and we
might be able to get back in the water tomorrow. I booked two boat dives on
Friday (Molokini and probably Turtle Town) and two shore dives on Monday
(hopefully Makena Landing but probably Ulua)
10/6/11
Drove to Makawao and Paia. Makawao is the cowboy town on the side of
Haleakala and Paia is the old hippie town on the north side of the island.
Afterward we just held down a lawn chair for the rest of the deay.
My Friday dive was cancelled due to bad diving conditions. There's still a surf
advisory due to the huge south swell. Maybe Saturday.O
10/7,8,9/11
Obviously, time got away from me. I did a great dive at Molokini and got a
shark picture. I also did a boat dive off of Makena Landing. Visibility was poor
and there were six foot seas. It took us nearly 2 hours to motor back to the
harbor.
I did a couple of shore dives at Makena Landing. This time, vis was great -
probably 75 feet! Had a great shark encounter in a cave. I got pictures but,
due to the low light, the camera slowed the film speed down and they came
out blurry. Tomorrow is a lazy last day of walking the beach.
10/12//11
Back to reality. Had an uneventful flight. I downloaded all of my email (300+)
before the flight took off and had most of it handled by the time we landed.
Only 356 days until we come back.
